Understanding The Rise of Digital Media

Digital Media has witnessed an exponential rise in the recent past. In this article we will try to understand the rise of digital media and how it impacts news agencies, journalists, movie makers, advertisers, and consumers.

It goes without saying that the world is going digital. In every aspect possible, technology is taking over the world. Increasingly every task is going online.  Be it shopping, banking or even basic tasks like holding meetings slowly but surely, your smartphone, tablet, and laptop is becoming the source for the same.

The Media industry is no different. The process of consuming news, watching movies, soap operas, and live sport, everything is becoming digital. Personal gadgets are increasingly becoming alternatives rather than mere substitutes.

The Coronavirus crisis has if anything accelerated this shift. With lockdowns being imposed, any sort of physical contact has become impossible across the planet. While the global crisis has devastated various industries, for those in the digital world, it has only come as a blessing in disguise.

With people fearing going outside, e-commerce platforms have come to the rescue of many by being the source of buying grocery and necessary essentials. Not to forget, video conference applications such as Zoom, Google meet, and Microsoft team becoming a daily necessity.

For movie watchers with theatres closing, digital OTT platforms have become the only source to enjoy cinema. Many producers have in fact gone on to release movies directly on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar. It has definitely led to an unimaginable scenario but one that is likely to become a norm.

Similarly, with the delivery of newspapers stopping across regions, people were forced to read news online through e-papers, websites of news portals or applications of various media houses.

While an already under threat traditional media industry is left greeting over its future, the new-age digital media only comes with more opportunities for anyone willing to make a career in the industry.

First of all, whichever stream of media one wants to get into, one thing that remains constant is that the digital world gives one more freedom.

First of all, not having to a hard word limit like in print media allows them to produce more informative and qualitative work.

Moreover, its multi-media structure gives more options allowing journalists to create content through various means like print, audio, and video rather than being stuck doing just one type of content format. Moreover, any type of content, especially in written mode, can be better supported with visualizations and graphic content.

For filmmakers, the emergence of OTT platforms is nothing short of a beacon of new life.

For filmmakers, the emergence of OTT platforms is nothing short of a beacon of new life. Firstly, it’s given the opportunity for more actors, directors, and production houses to enter an industry which has for years been dominated by very few people.

On the content side, it has given them the opportunity to venture into new types of stories that necessarily do not meet the traditional definition of commercial cinema. With the ability to make web series, streaming platforms have given them the ability to explore stories and characters in more depth.

Ultimately, digital is the future of the media industry. The coronavirus catastrophe has proved that those who had caught with the trend and adapted to the times survived an unprecedented period and even thrived in it. Those who had not adjusted face an existential crisis and anyone wanting to get into the industry must focus on mastering the digital world and take advantage of the rise of digital media.
